It’s Foodie Friday!- Let’s stay on our food A game.
Although salads are likely your best choice of meal on any given day it’s important that you don’t think that just because it has the name salad that it’s good for you. I want to address some of the things you may not think of when ordering a salad.
Let’s first name a few good reasons you will want to add salads to your diet before I ruin it with the some of the negatives:
Salads can be a great addition to your diet because they help you add the variety you need to get the full range of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. Adding a nice variety of greens, nuts, meat or meat alternatives veggies and fruit are excellent for a healthy lifestyle. Now that we have that out of the way let’s get real about those calories.
Although most vegetables are quite low in calories, it’s important to realize what has what. Where I see the biggest problem with salads is the dressing. You can take a perfectly good salad of only 300 or 400 calories and add the dressing and end up in the 800 calorie zone. Then top it with nuts, avocado, and steak bites and you have 1100 calories. For some of you, this may be perfect, especially you hard gainers or intermittent fasters. Also, those who are on a keto diet may enjoy the higher calories from fats in olive oil dressing, avocado, and nuts but the key thing to remember is that just because it’s a salad doesn’t mean you can have all you want. If you are trying to keep within a certain number of calories, beware of the ingredients in your salad. This is especially true when you are eating out. Restaurants, are always trying to find ways for you to fall in love with their food. Adding sugar, salt and msg to the food are all sure-fire ways to make you addicted and coming back for more. I’m not saying they all do this but be aware this may be the case. Ask for your dressing on the side and as for the ingredients. Or to be safe, order plain balsamic vinegar.
